About Caffe Reggio

& why it made the Carpe City list

  • Caffe Regio, opened in 1927, serves coffee and sfogliatella, a crispy pastry with ricotta, to both languid locals craving a caffeine boost and tired tourists seeking a respite in the heart of the Village.
  • It is the oldest cafe in Greenwich Village and introduced the cappuccino to the United States.
    • The cafe’s magnificent chrome and bronze cappuccino machine, built in 1902, was the first of its kind in the country.
  • Original owner, Domenico Parisi, brought the cappuccino, popular in Italy starting in the early 20th century, to America.
  • Caffe Reggio also has some of the best Italian cheesecake you’ll find in New York City!
  • While the café doesn’t have WiFi, it does have a dazzling interior with 16th-century artwork from the Caravaggio school.
    • Look out for a bench in the café that belonged to the Medicis, an affluent banking family from Florence and patron of Michelangelo.
  • Caffe Reggio is seen on the big screen in films such as Inside Llewyn Davis, In Good Company, The Godfather II, The Next Man, Next Stop Greenwich Village, Serpico, and Shaft.
    • Isaac Hayes’ Shaft soundtrack pays homage to the famous spot with two songs, but both titles, Walk from Regio’s and Café Regio’s, misspell the name!
  •  In 1959 a young presidential hopeful, John F. Kennedy, made a speech outside of the café.

Carpe City Trivia

Reggio sells coffee by the pound

If you want to make your own espresso at home with your (way less cool) espresso machine, you can do that. Just ask for a bag of Reggio beans!
