Home to the Famous Realist Painter for over 50 Years
& why it made the Carpe City list
Built in 1858 by his maternal grandfather, Edward Hopper called this place home until 1910. After Hopper’s death (1882-1967), the house fell into disrepair but was saved and restored by local community members. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, known as the “Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center.”
Edward Hopper was a renowned American Contemporary artist. His art has graced the White House, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Met, the Art Institute of Chicago, museums worldwide, and right here at his former home!
His most recognizable work is the 1942 painting “Nighthawks,” where he portrayed people sitting in a downtown diner late at night. Shortly after its completion, Nighthawks was sold to the Art Institute of Chicago for $3,000. It has remained there ever since.
