About Electric Lady Studios

& why it made the Carpe City list

Electric Lady Studios is the legendary recording founded by Jimi Hendrix.
- Jimi’s psychedelic studio, opened in 1970, was the first recording studio to be built and owned by a major musical artist.
Music greats like Patti Smith and Eric Clapton attended the studio’s epic opening party.
Since then, the studio has hosted top tier talent, including Coldplay, Patti Smith, Led Zeppelin, Kanye West, Rihanna, The Strokes, Sheryl Crow, Billy Joel, The Rolling Stones, The Clash, Dave Matthews Band.
- Most recently, U2, Beck, Arcade Fire, Daft Punk, Adele, and Interpol have all recorded here.
The studio is full of state-of-the-art equipment and a relaxed atmosphere.
Unfortunately, it is not open for public tours.

Carpe City Trivia

52 W. 8th Street used to house a nightclub!

The club, called The Generation, was known for late-night jam sessions from the likes of B.B. King, Chuck Berry, and Sly & The Family Stone.
