About Rockwood Music Hall

& why it made the Carpe City list

  • Sometimes it’s tough to figure out how a venue got its name. That’s not the case with Rockwood Music Hall.
    • Rockwood is named after Ken Rockwood, who started the club in 2005.
  • Rockwood is built for audiophiles. Known for its excellent acoustics, the club has played host to the likes of Sting, Nora Jones, and The Killers.
  • And, like nearby Arlene’s Grocery, Rockwood has been an incubator for nascent local talent that went on to hit it big, like Lady Gaga and Mumford & Sons.
  • Shows at Rockwood cover all genres, from Bluegrass to Rock to international sounds, taking advantage of three stages.
  • The club started as a listening room on Allen Street in 2005 but expanded into two adjoining spaces.
  • The acts grew along with the space:
    • Ken Rockwood calls that “moving from stage one to stage two” (stage 3 is for lesser-known acts).
  • The club started its own record label, Rockwood Music Hall Recordings, in 2013.

Carpe City Trivia

In the '90s, Ken Rockwood was part of the folk-pop duo Professor and Maryann

Discovered playing a gig at CBGB’s in 1993 and dubbed “A Simon and Garfunkel of our age,” they put out three albums with Bar None Records: “Fairytale,” “Lead Us Not Into Penn Station,” and “Self-Titled.”
