About St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church

& why it made the Carpe City list

  • For over 100 years, this Ukrainian parish has served as a spiritual, political, and cultural epicenter for several waves of Ukrainian Americans in New York.
  • The first Ukrainian rite liturgy of NYC was performed only a few blocks from its present-day location. In 1905 and again in 1911, the growing Ukrainian American community was able to purchase new buildings to accommodate the expanding congregation.
  • St. George’s present-day church was built between 1976 and 1978 to plans by architect Apollinaire Osadca. His designs were “based on ancient Ukrainian Byzantine style, which survived in Ukraine, despite western European trends.”
  • Great place to visit for anyone interested in the diverse culture and history of New York City.
