Carpe City Trivia

Who is this Veniero fellow?

Veniero is the last name of owner Antonio Veniero, who was just 15 when he immigrated to America from Italy in 1885 and began working in a candy factory. At 18, Antonio was made manager, and three years later, he opened his own candy shop. Antonio’s candy shop soon branched out to include coffee and biscottis, the start of Veniero’s. Today, Veniero’s Pasticceria & Caffé is run by his great-great-nephew.

What's the deal with the stained glass ceiling?

If you decide to eat inside, you’ll notice above the main seating section a giant display of stained glass which exemplifies the authenticity of the old-fashioned, Italian pastry shop. While the bakery has been running since 1894, the mural is comparatively new, as in 40 years old.  Antonio Veniero’s nephew, Frank, took over the bakery from his uncle and made many renovations, such as installing the Neapolitan glass ceiling. Other than the addition of the glass ceiling and some murals, the intricate tiling on the floors and wooden mirrors are all part of the original design.
