Alamo Scultpure

• Also called the Astor Place Cube
• Designed by Bernard “Tony” Rosenthal, this minimalist steel sculpture is 8 feet long on each side, weighs 1800 lbs, is mounted on a corner and… yes!!…it spins.
• It was created in 1967 as part of a temporary six-month art exhibition but became so popular as an icon and meeting place in the East Village that here it stands 50+ years later.
• Over the years the cube has withstood graffiti and a variety of pranks such as when the All Too Flat jokester squad turned it into a big Rubik’s Cube.
• Yarn superstar Agata Oleksiak (Olek) gave it a pink camo crochet covering. (See Below!)
• In 2013 a video went viral claiming a man lived in the cube. It is pretty funny.  See the video below.
• The cube has been taken down a couple of times for renovation. Most recently it was down in 2015 but came back (in theory) for one night on Halloween when a creative prankster dressed up as the cube and stood in its place. Best costume of the year! (See below!)
