Just in case you don’t already know, starting in the 1870s and topping out just after World War II, this part of the East Village was home to a significant number of Eastern European immigrants, mostly Ukrainians.
So much so that this area has been deemed Little Ukraine. (See Veselka, Streecha, The Ukrainian Museum, and Shevchenko Scientific Society nearby.)
Founded by Julian Baczynsky in 1970, this meat market is one of the few remaining Ukrainian shops in the ‘hood.
The market is famous for its kielbasa, prepared fresh every day and smoked in the kitchen.
They also have a very tasty smoked ham selection and some Eastern European specialties like Pierogis and Babkas.
