About Edgar Allan Poe

& why it made the Carpe City list

  • These brick buildings you see up and down this street are all part of the NYU campus. Towards your left, you will see some lighter-colored brick on a replica of an old-style townhouse with a white door and a lantern at #85 West 3rd Street.
  • When NYU wanted to build on this street, it tried to retain the look of this home for its historical significance to American fiction. It was the home of Edgar Allan Poe, where he reportedly wrote The Raven, The Bells, and The Fall of the House of Usher.
  • You can find a plaque on the wall beside the door commemorating the site.
  • Before becoming part of NYU’s law school, for 70 years, #85 was a famous Italian restaurant called Bertolotti’s. It has also been a fraternity house, and, in the 1970s, it was a gay dance bar called “The Gold Bug,” derived from another of Poe’s stories.
