About International Center of Photography Museum & School

& why it made the Carpe City list

  • The International Center of Photography (ICP) has been dedicated to “concerned photography” since 1974.
  • What is “concerned photography,” you ask?
    • It means socially and politically engaged image-making, with the power to teach or even to change the world.
  • And at ICP, teaching is the name of the game.
    • They operate a school that serves more than 3,500 teens and adults every year.
    • They offer everything from an afternoon learning about experimental photography, to a fully accredited Master’s program.
  • ICP also sports a museum and library.
  • Until recently, the School was in Midtown, and the Museum was on the Bowery. In January 2020, both were united at Essex Crossing, the new cultural space/retail hub/apartment complex on the Lower East Side.
