About Smalls

& why it made the Carpe City list

  • Initially created in 1994 by Mitchell Borden, he approached his business from a stance of generosity rather than profit. A culture of vibrant and newly energized young musicians claimed “Smalls” as their home base and began to develop their individuality in the music.
  • After a bankruptcy in 2002, the space was taken over by a new owner with a new concept. However, when that failed, the new owner asked Borden to return. They worked together to restart the Jazz concept and continued for three years.
  • In 2007, new partners came in to work with Borden. The trio sought to restore the club to its original vibrant spirit.
  • Before Borden’s retirement, “The SmallsLIVE Foundation for Jazz Art and Education,” a not-for-profit arts organization, was created (in 2018.) Among other things, the foundation played a critical role in keeping the venues afloat during the COVID-19 Pandemic of 2020.
  • “Smalls Live Jazz Club” has emerged as the top of its kind. A throwback to another era – when jazz clubs were both proving grounds for top artists and social scenes for the jazz community. Smalls now has an international reputation and draws fans worldwide as a destination spot for great jazz.
  • Check their website for specifics regarding “Reserve” tickets versus “Walk-ins.” Plan to arrive 30 minutes (or more) before show time.
  • Also, check for information about becoming a member of the SmallsLIVE Foundation to get access to their live streams!
