About Stuyvesant Fish House

& why it made the Carpe City list

  • This landmarked 1803 Federal Style home on Stuyvesant Street has illustrious connections to New York’s Dutch Period, the American Revolution and the Civil War!
  • It’s all in the family… Petrus Stuyvesant (great-grandson of Peter Stuyvesant) built this home as a wedding gift for his daughter Elizabeth when she married Revolutionary War hero Nicholas Fish.
  • Fish served at Valley Forge was commissioned as a Major at the age of 18 and is thought to be the youngest Major in the history of the US Army.
  • This is totally “the room where it happens”: Nicholas Fish was close friends with both Alexander Hamilton and General Lafayette. In fact, Fish was an executor of Hamilton’s estate, and he entertained Lafayette at this house when the General returned to New York in 1824.
  • Elizabeth and Nicholas’s son, Hamilton Fish (named after Alexander) was born in this house in 1808.
  • He served as Governor of New York, US Senator from New York, and finally, as Secretary of State under Ulysses S. Grant.
  • Today, the Stuyvesant-Fish house is owned by Cooper Union and serves as the home for its president.
  • There’s another Stuyvesant Fish House in the city, uptown at 25 East 78thStreet, built by Hamilton Fish’s son, Stuyvesant Fish. The elaborate home, completed in 1900, was designed by New York’s favorite Beaux Arts Starchitect Stanford White, and modeled on an Italian palace.
