About Anthology Film Archives

& why it made the Carpe City list

  • This is a great venue for serious cinephiles.
  • If you have an interest in the genres and history of film, then this spot should be on your must-see list.
  • Per their website, they have a particular focus on independent, experimental and avant-garde cinema.
  • You can expect to see anything from a screening of black & white movies from 1899 to documentaries on Greenwich Village from the 1960s to unfinished projects and everything in between.
  • It is a no-frills space.  Don’t expect to get a glass of wine or even some popcorn as there is no concession stand.
  • Besides the film screenings, the AFA also has, yes, you guessed it, archives!  They have one of the largest collections in the world of films, videos, stills, audio recordings and paper materials of the avant-garde genre.
