The bookstore and literary café of your dreams!
& why it made the Carpe City list
McNally Jackson has been slinging stories from 52 Prince Street since 2004. They may have the best-curated selection of books anywhere in the city. There are so many thousands upon thousands of volumes that they even hang from the ceiling!
The two-floor space puts fiction and non-fiction front and center as soon as you walk in and carries authors from around the world. Titles are organized by geography. Beyond literature, McNally also has fantastic art, history, cooking, travel, design, poetry, and essay sections. Their “staff picks” are also superb!
But, our favorite part of McNally might be the café, where you can chill out with a book over a cup of coffee and light fare. (We have spent countless hours this way!)
They also offer book clubs, readings, and speakers if you’re looking for a community hub. And, since they’re open ’til 10pm (9pm on Sundays), McNally is a serene and cerebral after-work hang-out spot. More recently, they’ve also expanded to Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan!
Founder Sarah McNally is the daughter of booksellers. Her parents founded the McNally Robinson bookstore chain in Canada.
