Welcome to 75½ Bedford St., the Narrowest House in New York.
- Measuring just 9½ feet wide on the outside, and just over 8 feet wide on the inside, this unusual space served as a carriage entrance for 77 Bedford Street, the building next door.
The Narrow House was built on this site during the Smallpox epidemic of 1873.
The house became a boardinghouse for actors at the nearby Cherry Lane Theater in 1923.
- That’s when Edna St. Vincent Millay moved in; she helped found the Cherry Lane Theater and lived at 75½ Bedford from 1923-1924.
- A plaque on the building’s exterior honors her work.

Edna St. Vincent Millay wasn't the only celeb to live in the Narrow House.

Other residents include Margaret Mead and Cary Grant. Rumor has it that Cary Grant lived here with his male lover before he was famous. However, they had to get a third roommate to afford the $15 per month rent.
