& why it made the Carpe City list
In February 2020, Debbie Harry told director Noah Baumbach that NYU students “should have to take a class to teach them about where the fuck they live.” And Harry could easily teach them! The Punk Rock Queen and lead singer of “Blondie” lived all over this neighborhood (most notably at 113 St. Marks and 266 Bowery.)
These days, you can catch her in a mural created by Shepard Fairey on the corner of Bleecker Street and the Bowery. The mural is just across from 315-Bowery-which-used-to-be-CBGB-and-is-now-a-John-Varvatos. Suffice it to say that Harry and Fairey are doing their part for New York City History!
Shepard Fairey is one of the world's most celebrated street artists. He's been at it since the 1980s, but these days, he's most notably the guy behind the "Obama Hope" poster.
