Carmine Street Guitars, at 42 Carmine, is home to Kelly’s Guitars.
Rick Kelly is a legend in the business of custom-made guitars. Some call him the “Stradivarius of guitar making.” His Guitars are all handmade in the back of the shop.
Kelly created a line of guitars called Bowery Pine made of wood from old New York City buildings.
- He has created guitars for famous musicians, including The Velvet Underground’s Lou Reed. One of Reed’s guitars was made of wood from the Chelsea Hotel.
The store is not always open on weekends, but if it is, and you are a guitar fan, stop in, say hello to Mr. Kelly, and maybe order up a new ax and add some true rock-n-roll to your soul.
