About Arlene's Grocery

& why it made the Carpe City list

  • Before the Bowery Ballroom, Pianos and a host of other hot spots on the LES, Arlene’s Grocery was one of the first music venues in the neighborhood!
  • Open since 1995, Arlene’s focuses on emerging talent and has nurtured a host of performers who went on to become stars, including Arcade Fire, Lady Gaga, and The Strokes.
  • It’s a great venue to see bands up close and personal. The intimate space has a capacity of just 150.
  • They also have two bars, and if you want to swing by for a drink without ponying up for tickets, no problem.
  • Beyond that, you’ll also find gallery space for emerging artists, and special events you can’t get anywhere else, like immersive murder-mystery theater, not to mention karaoke.

Carpe City Trivia

What's up with the Grocery Sign?

Arlene’s Grocery was once indeed a grocery (and a butcher shop).  The outdoor signage is from the old bodega, which expanded into the butcher shop next door in the late 90s.
