& why it made the Carpe City list
In the Lower East Side, at the corner of Ludlow and Rivington Streets, behold Brooklyn’s own Beastie Boys! This homage to Michael “Mike D” Diamond, Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz, and the late Adam “MCA” Yauch was created in 2014 and again in 2019 by Brooklyn artist Danielle Mastrion.
Why here? It’s the location that took center stage on their 1989 fan-favorite “Paul’s Boutique” album cover. In fact, the cover folded out to display a panorama of the former clothing store & entire intersection!
No Sleep Till Brooklyn – Almost nine years after the initial request, in July 2022, the New York City Council approved a name change of “Beastie Boys Square” for this corner. A celebration of rap and hip-hop, a celebration of the neighborhood, and a celebration for their local boys!
