About Russ & Daughters Cafe

& why it made the Carpe City list

  • FOOD – Based on their famous appetizing store down the street, you will find noshes, platters, and boards of smoked fish, herring, caviar, soups, eggs, salads, french toast, and of course, bagels and bialys. Yes, the food lives up to the hype.
  • ATMOSPHERE – Clean and modern but with an old-school diner feel.  It is consistently crowded.
  • WHO/WHAT IT IS GOOD FOR – An excellent spot for brunch. Best for groups of two and four. There is not a lot of space for large groups, but they can accommodate them.  Also great for solo dining at the counter.  Russ & Daughters is also a perfect spot to take visitors who are interested in experiencing a slice of the old Jewish Lower East Side.
  • BEVERAGE SITUATION – A full bar with a well-curated selection of wine and beer. They have bespoke brunch cocktails like a bloody mary with rye croutons and dill infused vodka, as well as a shrubs menu and a classic egg cream menu.
  • SUGGESTED EATS/DRINKS – If you like Matzoh Ball Soup, get it here. All of the smoked fish is excellent, the pastrami-cured salmon sandwich called the Pastrami Russ is also worth a try. Our group’s pickled herring fans enjoyed the Trio. Everyone enjoyed the selection of Bloody Marys.
  • TIPS – If there’s a wait, they will take your phone # and text you. Check out the street art nearby on Allen Street while you wait. They take reservations for dinner and have a cool jazz music series that happens once a month.
